Creating a world where consumers effortlessly choose sustainable actions and strive for net-zero
Product Design

Goodside was a venture within the RBCx Ventures portfolio. The mobile application measured your carbon footprint through your transactions, provided you with insights on your emissions, and allowed you to delve into brands’ climate commitments, so you can make more climate-friendly decisions day to day.
The team was looking for a Product Designer with strong visual design skills to take their pre-existing brand guideline and translate it into their digital product, shaping the look and feel while ensuring consistency and simplicity. Simultaneously, fleshing out a comprehensive design system in order to maintain a single source of truth.
Your Goodside score represents the estimated sustainability of your spending. The app analyzes the following three factors related to your transactions: total monthly emissions, emissions per transactions, and merchant sustainability. Your score updates each time you make a new transaction and log back into the app and ranks from excellent down to poor in five steps.
While users may gradually get a better score with fewer purchases, we understood the score does not capture the full picture due to several factors such as the application not tracking what items are actually being purchased and the user's daily habits.
When you have made a sufficient amount of transactions after connecting your credit card to the application, Goodside will begin generating insights for you. These insights include your overall emissions in the past 30 days, your weekly emissions broken down, your top three highest emissions transactions, among which categories you have the highest emissions, whether you shopped at any brands with Science-Based Targets, and how you compare to the average Canadian. You have the choice to break down your monthly emission and benchmarking insights by categories (I.e. Transportation, Home, Food, Goods) so you can discover patterns in your spending habits and make more sustainable decisions. Here, users are also encouraged to set an emission target and have Goodside keep you accountable to lowering your emissions.
The Goodside brand repository allows users to discover sustainable alternatives to the businesses they frequently visit. Here they can find a number of curated Goodside affiliates with promotional offers to take advantage of. They can choose to filter through businesses with B Corp Certifications (Businesses that demonstrate high social and environmental performance), companies with Science-Based Targets (targets that provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions), and search through multiple categories.
When users tap into a brand, they land on the brand’s profile where they can dive a little deeper into their sustainable practices and certifications, visit the brand’s website, and share the profile with friends. Brand profiles may also be visited through the user’s transactions list within the Insights tab.
Goodside enables users to take climate action right within the app and offset their carbon footprint by contributing to a curated portfolio of carbon offset projects through the Patch.io API. Users can feel free to browse through Goodside's existing offsetting content and guide to offsetting your carbon emissions as well.
The Goodside Challenge was apart of our Employee Pilot which was opened to RBC Employees within Canada. For twelve weeks within the eight month pilot, we revealed a new topic for users to explore, learn, and challenge themselves. Within each topic, they are prompted to pause and reflect on their current lifestyle and explore changes they can adopt based on the topic.
The Goodside website promotes the application, allows visitors to learn about the team’s vision, discover Goodside’s free eBooks, and deep dive into their extensive blog. Meanwhile, Goodside also shares content on Instagram and LinkedIn consisting of tips, insights, and news that encourage living sustainably.
The Goodside application and climate education platform was recognized with a So(cial) Good Design award from the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) within the Sustainability, Ecology, and Climate category in 2022, celebrating design’s undeniable power to incite meaningful action and make positive change.
